SO YOU THINK THIS IS HOT?

Everyone this past week has been talking about the extreme heat and high humidity. It has been very uncomfortable to say the least. But, when you get older, it seems you can always remember one year or time when it was much worse!

One such time was in the summer of 1989, when I lived in West Des Moines and it was a week-end of the Ruan Greater Des Moines Grand Prix race through the streets of downtown Des Moines. It was in July and the actual temperature was near 100 degrees and with high humidity. You had difficulty breathing. The air was smothering.

The race was not completed, but, we, my ex-wife May and I, had had enough of the stifling heat and decided to head back home in West Des Moines. The condo we owned was 4921 Wes Park Drive and the complex had an outdoor swimming pool. Couldn't wait to take a dip in that cool water.  I swear half the people  from the complex were in the pool that day due to the heat, despite the fact that everyone had air-conditioning. Now that was hot! The good news was we lived in a time when you could escape it!
