The sun finally broke. It was Sunday, October 5th, AM. We were headed to what had been on my bucket list for a long time. In two hours or so, we would be there. But, first we had a lot of beautiful country to drive through. We cut up to highway 28 and headed for Sault Ste. Marie to experience the ships passing through the Soo Locks. The trees and foliage were absolutely magnificant. We had hit the jack-pot on color. And the next day driving back home it was obvious when the the trees were not as colorful.
I was like a small boy waiting for the first ship to pass through around 1 PM going from Lake Superior to Lake Huron and at 2:30 another 1,000 ft. ship going the opposite direction. The process of watching these huge ships rise and fall with the water in the lock is amazing. It is something one must see to fully appreciate. It made my day!
From there we drove south through the also amazing five mile Mackinac Bridge, that divides Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. We drove on down the Lake Huron coast, highway 23, also called the "Sunrise Highway." We stayed the night in the town of Rogers City for the night right on the lake. For sake of argument, we were very disappointed in this side of Michigan. Or at least the area and part of the coast line we were experiencing. But, tomorrow would bring a new day and much to look forward to! You can't win them all.
