MY SISTER DORIS ALWAYS AMAZES ME!

Just a few short weeks ago, my sister, Doris, and I completed our trip to the Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Colorado regions. It was decided by both of us, the most rewarding trip either one of us has ever under-taken in terms of all the individual "wonders" we have experienced in one trip and in such a short period of time-basically four days.

One thing I will never forget is how many times Doris brought up a connection between the town or area and someone she knew. It reminded me of the time we went on an in state trip and she was still reciting off people she knew and where they lived as far away as Pella, Iowa.

At some point in the trip, I asked her if I simply mentioned some town in Iowa, if she would know someone who lived there. All the above mentioned states, it seemed she knew someone from the Laurel area that moved out there or a relative of someone she knew that lived in one of these western states, even for a short period of time. Most times I would not tune in to her references, but, once in a while I caught a name and quizzed her a little more about the story! All I can say is if you ever want to know about someone from the Laurel area, their family and etc, just get a hold of my sister! She is amazing!

GRAND-DAUGHTER'S GRADUATION/SUCH DIVERSITY!

My grand-daughter, Ciera Madison Riley graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa this past Saturday May 28, 2016. The commencement was held in  the Knapp Center at Drake University.

I couldn't help think of the difference between my graduation class at Laurel High School in 1962 and our class of 20 plus as compared to Ciera's huge class of around 350. And, I realize there are some graduating classes in the Metro area much larger.

It was pointed out by the Principal that over thirty languages are spoken in the class or school. And, not that it is a bad thing, I never witnessed at a high school graduation, by the class and guests, so much diversity in race and I assume by the dress-religion. It will, no doubt, prepare a lot of these graduates for what lies ahead for them. Times are a changing!

HE STILL SAID: "GENTLEMEN START YOUR ENGINES!"

Just about every year I have to watch at least the start of the "Indy 500." It was good to see this year that it was completely sold out with at least 300,000 racing fans. It is the highest capacity sports venue in the world.  I will always have a special place for the race, as I attended 15 or so races from the mid 1970's till early 1990's. To witness the beginning of the race there is no greater RUSH! To this date I still have not attended a  major NASCAR race, but, is high on my Bucket List.

In 1977, I was in attendance when Janet Guthrie was the first woman driver to enter the race. Everyone was speculating what the owner, Tony Hulman, would say as he was the one who spoke those most famous words in auto racing. He introduced her as the first lady driver with a few words about her and then said: "Gentleman Starts Your Engines!" He didn't budge from tradition. The place went wild! She dropped out after only a few laps due to mechanical difficulty.

TWO VERY CLOSE FRIENDS IN ONE DAY!

Yesterday was oh so long, but, oh so enjoyable! First, I left Williamsburg about 9:30 AM and headed to Marshalltown to meet an old classmate and dear friend, Tony Preston and his wife Jolene. They were up here in the area visiting relatives from their home in Prescott, Arizona. Of course, we met at Taylor's Maid-Rite for an early lunch and then went to Riverview Park where we could just relax and visit for a time. Getting to see Tony, even sometimes for a short visit is always such a pleasure. He is very special person!

From Marshalltown, I headed down 330 and on over to Urbandale, Iowa for an overdue visit with another very dear and close classmate Jerry Roberts and his wife Judy. Jerry and I go back to the first day of Kindergarten at Laurel Consolidated School. Then, we went all the way through school together until graduation in 1962. After a very good visit, the three of us went up to Tasty Taco's which has a restaurant at the Cobblestone Mall at 86th and Hickman close to where Judy and Jerry lives.

To be able to visit with two very close and dear friends in one day in different towns and also eat at TWO of my very favorite eateries, bar none, life can't get much better! And, the day wasn't over yet.I won't say the day got better after the two visits, but, it just continued on! Stay tuned.

BRANDON'S REALLY FUNNY JOKE OF WEEK!

A guy walked into the examination room with a carrot sticking out of each ear and a celery stick stuck in his nose. "First of all": said the Doctor, "You appear to not be eating right!!!!"

DONALD MADE IT OFFICIAL!

TO ALL THE NAY SAYERS!!! GO DONALD GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"ROCK & ROLL IS HERE TO STAY!"

There is a musical coming up on June 2nd thru June 26 called "Million Dollar Quartet." It will be held at the Old Creamery Theatre in Amana, Iowa. It is inspired by the true story of a Sun Records recording session with Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis. If there is any interest out there check it out in Hoopla in the Cedar Rapids Gazette. This could be good live "Oldies" fun! If you are thinking of going maybe I will see you there. Let me know. dennismlaverty@gmail.com.

I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW!

I just heard on the radio the song"I Can See Clearly Now" by Johnny Nash from the 1970's. I have always considered this my life's theme song!

"I can see all obstacles in my way- Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind- It's gonna be a bright bright sun-shiny day!"  Words for some of to live by!

MEMORABLE LETTER FROM NORWAY 1948!

My sister, Doris, gave me an old letter that was actually sent to me November 1948.
She had a pen pal at the time from Oslo, Norway. Doris' pen pal's mother wrote this letter to me on behalf of the pen pal's young brother who was also age three as I was at the time. The letter was written in English and I would like to share it!

Oslo Nov. 11, 1948

Dear Dennis Michael

I am just a little boy from Norway. My mother is writing this. My mother tells me that you live on a farm where you have all kinds of animals. Would like to live like that. I love all the animals cows, horses, pigs, chickens, and don't forget the dog and cat. We live in a big city with 300,000 people but we just have one room and a kitchen. We don't have room for a dog or cat.

I'm sending you a picture of myself so you can see that I am a big boy. We now have winter and I've already been out on the sled. I would like to get more snow and then they can go on skies. We can skate on ice with ice skates too. The weather has been nasty, foggy and rainy like. The smoke from the big boats hangs over the town. Oslo is a sea town. Lots of greetings and a Happy New Year from your Letter Pal.

A VISIT TO GRACELAND. NO! NOT THAT GRACELAND!

This past Tuesday while in the Marshalltown area, I had to visit Graceland Cemetery, where most all of my family were laid to rest! I always like to walk through most of the cemetery and say hello and acknowledge most of family that have preceded me. My next time I visit my intention is to walk the entire grounds and note not only family but many folks that I knew while growing up in the Laurel community.

ONE OF GREATEST LIES!

This past Saturday night while at the Ped Mall and enjoying "Catfish Keith" the Blues singer, I got a chuckle out of one thing that took me back many years. When it got time for his break he announced that he was going to break for fifteen minutes and be right back. Ha!

It reminded me of times when I was very young and bands at a dance would announce that they were taking a "quick break" and would be right back. It always seemed like it was a half hour or more. Maybe it always seemed longer because I was anxious to get dancing again!

WE ALL NEED A TAYLOR'S MAID-RITE!

No I couldn't stay away from Taylor's this past week while in Marshalltown. One thing that is worth noting is the fact than when I was there at a little before the noon hour, the place was packed and with several people waiting for a seat. I didn't mind waiting at all.

I guess what made the wait worthwhile was not only was I not in a big hurry, but, the fact that it made me feel good that one of my favorite eateries of all time WAS busy and no signs of letting up. We all need a place like Taylor's Maid Rite, when coming home to be there for us and say "Welcome Home Dennis!" Life is good. Even though I only had one with pickles and mustard with water, it made everything for a few moments good! May you always be there for us!

DOWNTOWN IOWA CITY/ NOTHING LIKE IT!

Last night, Saturday 5/21/2016, I drove to Iowa City to catch Catfish Keith in the PED MALLat Dubuque and College Sreets. Catfish Keith was a Blues performer who kicked off live entertainment in the IC downtown for the summer. This was my first encounter and must admit that I was extremely impressed.

This pedestrian area that was developed years ago is unmatched by anything similar in the state of Iowa that I have experienced. Even downtown Des Moines or the Valley Junction area of West Des Mooines cannot compare. Even the area for liveentertainment set up by the pond at Jordan Creek doesn't hold a candle to IC.

Not only was the amount of people there, it was the type of people that was refreshing to see. A feeling of a cosmopolitan area. Old people young people, and little people! Lots of variety in fashion styles that one doesn't see in small towns like Williamsburg.  One thing I will always observe is that it just makes an older person like myself feel better to be around younger people like you see in a college or university town. Then, when you put so many "hip" people from all walks like you have in this area of the PEDMALL, it is truly refreshing and worth many comebacks this upcoming summer and hopefully many summers to come!

COMMERCIALISM AT ITS FINEST!

Last night while driving to Iowa City, I caught the first inning or two of the Chicago Cubs baseball game. At one point the announcer described what the uniforms were like that both teams were wearing including color of the shirt, pants, socks, and caps. The he said: This Uniform Description has been brought to you by Sherwin Williams Paint-the paint of Major League Baseball!

Next thing you know they will have a sponsor for the guy who rubs the baseballs down with mud and how he feels about the upcoming game!! I mean really!

DORIS PICKED THE PERFECT EATERY

One of my greatest pleasures while traveling by auto has been driving awhile in the AM, then finding that perfect little diner with the name like "Alice's" on the square of some small quaint little town. But, with several of your motels offering free breakfasts now days that has interfered with that traveling treasure somewhat.

Last week, while with my sister, Doris, on our western journey, we were in Gillette, Wyoming, late morning and had only grabbed a pastry or two early that AM. Out of no where she mentioned that she would really like to find a place that served breakfast. My sister sometimes really surprises me sometimes and couldn't have said anything at the moment better. Glory Be!

Our Guardian Angel was with us on this ocassion. Up ahead no more than two blocks was a Village Inn restaurant. How could that be! It was! I know what you are thinking. It wasn't small, quaint, or a place called Alice's. But, this place, I know from year's of experience, makes great breakfast Stuff! That's their middle name. Life is Good!

GRAND MARAIS, MINNESOTA-COOLEST TOWN!

Just this morning on CBC News, some travel expert was listing  cool areas in United States that get over-looked. One was Grand Marais, Minnesota. It's about two-thirds up the "North Shore Drive" of Lake Superior on highway 61 north of Duluth.

I was up there on the tail end of the North Shore trip and fell in love with the town and area. First of all.it is not like Galena, Illinois. You don't feel like yo have to leave your wallet and credit cards in the car. Just simple quaint little stores and primarily a big old fashion general store where you can purchase all kinds of local stuff including a "Elmer Fudd" hat! A few small coffee shacks dot the downtown and near the lake where you can just walk up and purchase your favorite brew!

The bay area there would remind one more of a scene from somewhere in Maine and not necessarily the mid-west. And, of course, the water is deep blue and crystal clear. The drive to there is on Reader's Digest- Most Scenic Drives in America.  For most of us, it's so close to home too!

SHE WAS A PHILOSOPHY MAJOR!

Someone at the Burg Grocery the other day simply said to another customer "Hoe are you?" It reminded me of a old junior- high flame. Her name was Denise Walker and she lived in a near-by town of Gilman. I would like to fast forward to my senior year and we re-connected and I asked her to attend my Senior Prom.

She was a year ahead of me and was a freshman at an in-state private college. She was taking or majoring in Philosophy. It seemed like every time I o would say something like "How are you" she would follow up with "What do you mean by that?" It is a very pretty moon! That was followed with "Now what do you mean by the moon is pretty?" That evening got really old very quickly! Philosophy-Right!

NO DORIS-THAT'S A NO NO!!

Last week while my sister Doris and I were on our trip one of our major stops at Devil's Tower in eastern Wyoming. While there Doris slipped into the Gift Shop and one of her purchases was a blue baseball cap with "Devil's Tower" written on the front.

It reminded me of a story a good friend told while skiing in Colorado years ago. He was an avid and excellent skier. In jest but at the same time he was somewhat serious, he began to explain the do's and don'ts  of wearing travel apparel.

First, if going to Colorado to ski you don't buy a baseball hat that says Ski Colorado! No!
If you are going to Vail you don't buy a hat that says Ski Vail! No! But, if you are at Vail and are skiing a certain area that has a difficult run that is called "Deadman's Gultch" and you can find a hat with that on it, that is the one to buy!

When you get back home and someone asks you where and what is "Deadman's Gultch? You can say in a "flippant" manner, it's at Vail, of course! But, it is OK if my big sister wants to wear her new hat that says "Devil's Tower" AT The Devil's Tower!

BEFORE YOUR EYES-PERFECTION TO DISASTER

This is just one of those minor observations that I have witnessed traveling through the years. This has to do with your motel room when you first walk through that door and look around. Everything is so neat looking and clean.

First of all, the bed is made to perfection with fluffed pillows standing up straight at an angle. The bathroom counter top has soaps and shampoos all neatly aligned with towels folded that certain way on a metal shelf above.

Then it seems like you blink and by early the following morning, it looks like a small tornado zipped through the room. Open suitcases lying around, with dirty clothes in one corner, and of course all the waded up used  towels tossed in a corner of the bathroom. It would be fun to see a video "fast speed" of it all taking place in a very short time anyway. I said it was a minor observation!

LADY WITH TATTOO"S!

This past week while in Marshalltown , I stopped into a local convenience store for a simple cup of coffee. The lady at the cash register was an attractive person, in her 50's possibly,  and with an well managed hair-do. But, then I glanced at her arms and they were totally covered with tattoos, solid! I know I am old fashion in some ways, but, I still don't "dig" over the top body piercing of any kind. There will always be someday!

ALL I WANTED WAS A TACO SALAD!

While on vacation last week, the first night I had an Indian Taco at a local eatery called the "Bunk House" in Valentine, Nebraska. My sister, Doris, had what I really should have had and that was a "hot beef sandwich" with yummy gravy on white bread and mashed potatoes.

What was really back of my mind was a simple taco salad in the eatable shell like you can get at a Taco John's. That image never left me and I didn't have or get it until I reached home. The following day, I went to the Burg Grocery and purchased an "Azteca shells that you can stick in the oven to shape. The rest was history with my favorite Salsa and sour cream. When it comes to food I'm like an elephant and don't forget!

CHECK OUT 50'S SONG "TRANSFUSION" by NERVOUS NORVUS!

INSURANCE PITCHMAN/ AN IDIOT!

The other day I caught one of the many car insurance commercials where the "pitchman" has had the same car insurance carrier for "20 years" and then checked this new company and it had saved him hundreds of dollars!

My question is if he is so smart about changing auto coverage, why did he wait so long! Truth be known he could be sitting on a small fortune if you factor in "hundreds of dollars" in one year compounded over twenty years savings. Most of us with average intelligence know that you should shop a little for a lower premium on any type of casualty insurance-car, homeowners, business, etc. at least every three years or so. And, it is funny that all the major companies can save you hundreds of dollars. Somebody is lying!

ROCKIES/ HIGH PLAINS-W/ SISTER DORIS-day 4 & 5

Day 4 & 5, Friday & Saturday, May 13 & 14, 2016

Day four started from Casper, Wyoming and from there we headed south on Interstate 25 to destinations of the Fort Collins, Greeley, and Loveland, Colorado area. From there we headed west through Loveland and on up the Big Thompson Canyon to Estes Park via Federal highway 34.

You have to be impressed no matter how many times you drive through this narrow and steep canyon with the roar and at full capacity of the Big Thompson River. It's what a mountain stream should look and sound like complete with fishermen on occasion doing a little fly fishing for a tasty rainbow trout.

On arriving in Estes Park and a light lunch, we prepared to check out the Stanley Hotel which was high on my list being such a fan of the movie "The Shining" and that it was called the "Overllook." I had always wanted to see this famous Hotel that was built around 1907 for the rich by Stanley of Stanley Steamer fame. I was somewhat disappointed. It was actually just on the edge of town and not sitting out somewhere by itself on the base of some majestic mountain peak. Although, there are some small peaks directly behind it. I am sure if you could get back far enough and up high it would be a more impressive setting. I guess I will just always keep the image of the Hotel from the movie in my memories!

From the Stanley we headed up on #34 to the entrance of the North entrance to the Rocky Mountain National Park. We simply did what they call "The Loop" around and back to Estes. But, that drive you can see the most beautiful panoramic view of many snow capped Peaks in the horizon. I never tire of such a view. Someday I hope to simply stay at one of the old time motel complexes that dot the highway north of Estes and the Entrance to the Park. From these locations you not only get this view of the mountain peaks but, the advantage of the Big Thompson River at your front door. Someday I may just drive out there and stay just a night. It would be well worth the drive!

From the Estes Park area, we headed back east and stayed Friday night in Sterling, Colorado and on home from there on Saturday AM up Interstate 76 and then I-80 and the 12 hour plus journey straight home. The approx. 2400 mile trip in four days, may well be the most scenic traveling trip in terms of all the "sights" seen. Otherwise, a lot of "Bang for the Buck!" One last note. If you ever get the opportunity to check out the old fort souvenir shop at the North Platte, Nebraska exit, it is huge and has every imaginable western themed souvenir you could ever want. It is unbelievable with, in addition, lots of authentic Western and Native American artifacts.

BEST TIME TO SEE MOUNTAINS!!

Just a footnote to our trip out west this past week, this is an ideal time to go on vacation, if you can, for several reasons. Obviously, most families are not vacationing yet as schools are still in session thus very little traffic on the road, in restaurants, and ample vacancies in lodging with cheaper rates. Plus, going to the Mountains there is lots of snow still on the peaks for added beauty and the mountain streams are full and rolling along in all their mighty force!  Advantages of being a Senior! I love it!

POPCORN AHOLIC!

This story started Saturday night while returning with my sister Doris from our trip out west. She mentioned that since it was so late, she was just going to make some popcorn and then go to bed. That sounded good to me. Power of suggestion!

I stopped at the Kum and Go convenience store at the Williamsburg exit to pick up some p-corn. All they had was the packaged type for making in a micro-wave. No old fashion regular popcorn to make the old fashion way-on the stove top. The Burg Grocery was closed as it was passed 9 PM. So I settled for potato chips. Oh well!

Then Monday, a lady went through the check-out at the Burg Grocery with about six packages of the old fashion popcorn. She mentioned on the way out that she really loves the stuff and has some every night. She adds lots of butter and salt. Then as an added kicker, she spreads it out on a cookie sheet and puts it in the oven to make it crispy! She was slim and trim so maybe that is the answer. A popcorn diet! I'm not sure my doctor would agree!

HIGH PLAINS W/ SISTER DORIS day-3

Day 3, Thursday May 12, 2016

It was THE day for me! The one thing on this trip that was calling me back for the third time in my life was  the"Devil's Tower!" The first time I viewed it back in the 1980's, I was mesmerized by it. It was simply awesome! We were headed up to the Monument early on Thursday morning from Sundance, Wyoming.

I am not sure just where we first viewed it from a distance, but, it was like witnessing something almost Spiritual. It gave me chills. After arriving at the base we drove around to the west side face and parked. In early morning with the sun still hiding behind it, one could get a really good feel of its beauty and magnitude. With binoculars one could get a feel of the real difficulty of climbing its straight up sheer walls. If you have never ventured up to view this one of a kind Monument put it on your list! It is not that far from Rapid City!

From Devil's Tower, we were then headed back down to I-90 and Gillette, Wyoming and then the Big Horn Mountains. We did get to see off of I-90 in Gillette where all the coal mining is done in that area. What a hole! From Buffalo west we entered the Big Horn Mountains via scenic Federal 16 over the pass at 9,666 feet and much much snow. And then through the Ten Sleep Canyon over to Worland, Wyoming. The Ten Sleep Canyon drive is one of THE most spectacular drive- thru Canyons I have ever witnessed!! It was a spectacular, wide, and a colorful   (with reds, pinks, blues, grays, and oranges) gorge that seems to be off most people's radar. I know that we should have gone on over to visit Yellowstone and the Tetons, but, we both had been there and were glad that we experienced together the Big Horns and Ten Sleep areas as a new adventure.

We made it to Casper, Wyoming at the end of that third day and were almost giddy with all that we experienced and seen that day and the days before. Could this trip get any better? Well, we shall see!

THE HIGH PLAINS/ WITH SISTER DORIS-day 2

      Day 2 Wednesday May 11, 2016

We left Valentine, Nebraska in the AM and headed north on Federal 83 to the Badlands of South Dakota. From there we caught state 44 and traveled west and cut straight thru the Badlands area until entering the Badlands National Park and looping the most scenic area of it until leaving and coming out at Wall, South Dakota and having lunch across the street from the famous Wall Drug. Coming up the way we did from the south via Nebraska, I realized for the first time the immensity of the Badlands. They are amazing! I used to think they were over-rated when I would just catch them off I-90 and not spending little time viewing them before moving on west. Absolute beauty!

We then drove though Rapid City and drove up to Mount Rushmore. It was still very impressive and appeared even larger than remembered, even though I hadn't been there since the mid 1990's. We caught 16A and drove all through the Black Hills National Forest. I had no intention of driving all through the Forest and actually didn't understand what the A stood for in 16A. If you ever see a sign and the number has an A behind it beware! Although, even surviving all the hair-pins it was quite beautiful. We actually went through one tunnel on that drive and viewed Mt. Rushmore. It was like viewing the Faces through a telescope. I hope I can find a photo like that on Pinterest or similar.

Due to my error we looped back through Rapid City and caught I-90 and headed west until reaching Sundance and staying the evening before heading north to Devil's Tower National Monument the next morning. Like a little kid, I could hardly wait to reach this famous Eastern Wyoming's Monolith!

MY SCENIC PICKS IN THE HIGH PLAINS!

I am simply going to list the places viewed and visited on a recent trip to the Upper High Plains this past week of May 10th through May 14th, 2016. Admittingly, I have never seen in my lifetime such beauty in such a short period of time. Some areas I have seen, others not, and some time spent more thoroughly. It will be one of my favorite trips ever!

1. Sand Hills Area, Northwest Nebraska.

2. Badlands , South Dakota

3. Mount Rushmore, South Dakota

4. Black Hills via highway 16A in entirety, South Dakota

5. Devil's Tower, Eastern Wyoming.

6. Big Horns and pass via scenic highway 16. Buffalo to Worland.

7. Ten Sleep Canyon area. Absolutely Beautiful-Must See*

8. Big Thompson Canyon and River,  between Loveland and Estes Park, Colorado

9. Rocky Mountain National Park, near Estes Park, Colorado

10. Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, Colorado

HIGH PLAINS LIFETIME TRIP W/ SISTER DORIS-DAY 1

      Day 1, Tuesday May 10, 2016.

My sister, Doris, and I headed out around 8AM and headed west on I-80 to our High Plains Journey. Our first leg was to Grand Island, Nebraska and the evening destination to Valentine, Nebraska on Federal highway 83.

Neither one of us had ever driven through the "Sand Hills" area of northwestern Nebraska.  Through many years we, like many people, have driven through Nebraska on our way to Colorado and the Rocky Mountains. Most of us never think that there is anything in the Cornhusker state worth seeing. How wrong we were!

The area, especially, between the town of Thedford,Nebraska and the 60 miles north to Valentine,Nebraska was most impressive. It is hard to convey to someone about such beauty that simply is just rolling terrain with grass covered sand and dotted with small natural lakes, ponds, and marshes and all the while sitting above the Ogallala Aquifer.

This is cattle country. Huge ranches that set back, in some cases, many miles and whose sole objective is raising cattle where once buffalo roamed. It appears to be the perfect balance between man and nature.  The 60 mile stretch into Valentine, there was almost NO signs of man's footprints. No junk cars, no run down buildings, or billboards. Nothing! It is like experiencing a purity in nature that you don't see every day no matter where you live.

I would would strongly advise anyone to check this area out the next time you go west. It is highly under-rated. I plan on going to this area some day again and exploring it more thoroughly!  I only wish that this simple natural beauty will never change.

BIG SHORT FAT IRVING!

I heard this song on the 50's channel of XM this morning. It is a stitch. It's called "The Ballad of Irving" by Frank Gallop. Look it up. "Big Short Fat Irving!"

NO I AM NOT HARD OF HEARING!!

Well it finally happened today! A customer, in very close range, spoke to me in a very loud voice. I guess I knew the day would come. Even the checker noticed the uptick in the voice.

When I was younger, I know there had to be times when I talked louder to an older person.  With my Grandma Smith, I had to almost shout because she refused to wear hearing aids. I used to get worn out visiting her at the nursing home in her later years. But, I loved her so and it was always worth while.

And, I know that I have talked louder to someone who doesn't speak our language very well and also would talk slower too! Like that would help them understand better. I guess I just chalk it up to one of those "closer to going out than coming in!" I still am a little upset. My HEARING is just fine!

A YOGI-ISM!

I'm not in a batting slump-I'm just not hitting!

WHAT'S WITH ALL THAT RICOTTA?

We all have stories and experiences about too many cereals and so forth. Along that line I've always purchased traditional spaghetti sauce so I can add all my own favorite yummy's like sweet Italian sausage, mushrooms, green peppers, onions, and the like.

One day I was looking for my jar of Ragu brand of  traditional spaghetti sauce and it wasn't there. Oh sure, there was chunky, garden, mushroom, and green peppers, three cheese, basil, garlic, and so on. No traditional!

I finally parked my cart down the aisle a ways back so as not to block anyone and then got down on my knees and starting at the bottom shelf, one row and one jar at a time through every brand, including all store brands, yuk! Finally! There it was. Way at the back. One jar of it left. Hallelujah!

And, while we are on Italian food. How about a quick story on Ricotta cheese for making lasagna. At the Hy-Vee store in Marshalltown, they have stocked low fat ricotta, part skim ricotta, part skim ricotta, and of course, whole milk ricotta. And, lots of people actually like cottage cheese in their lasagna. Is this a great country or what!

RETIREMENT-SORT OF!

I used to make light of people who worked, especially, in factories and jobs that were repetitious every day for 365 days a year. No wonder they could tell you with precision to the last day when they were going to retire.

It hasn't been the same for me though. I have been fortunate through-out my life to have been involved in different occupations which provided diversity most every day even though many of those days went far beyond the normal 40 hours per week. And, I never would have changed being my own boss. No sir!

All the advice I've received or heard about retirement all centers around "KEEP MOVING!" My doctor, a few years ago, told me about how many patients he had treated and upon their retirement and basically sitting in a chair didn't last long!

A close friend and class-mate, Tony Preston, still plays tennis and is involved in a softball league. At least I power walk every morning for approx. 25-30 minutes plus my part-time job involves walking and moving for 6-7 hours per day for 3 days per week. My daily battle is always trying to lose weight versus my love of eating and cooking. It has been the very fabric of my life style.

BEING COURTEOUS DOESN'T MAKE IT RIGHT!

Living in a smaller community I find everyone to be more passive and polite. That's a good thing most times. It's not good, though, when it comes to driving on occasion. I first experienced this when living in Marshalltown and now especially in Williamsburg.

The driving situation goes like this. When pulling up to a four way corner, I am going to make a left hand turn. The person who pulls up at the same time across from me is going straight. Even if the person, usually an old guy like myself with too much time on his hands, has the right-of-way, he waves me on to make my left hand turn.

I don't know how many times this has happened. I know they are just being polite, but, by all traffic laws not right. Sometimes, I use hand gestures for them to go first or just sit and wait them out. Where do people get their driver's license? Cracker Jacks?

DRINKING @ 7AM IN THE MORNING!

A lady today at the Burg Grocery, was talking about a day in which she had gotten off work from a 3rd shift, and to put it nicely, going home and indulging in "Happy Hour." It simply reminded me of a time when going to work in Marshalltown around 7 AM . I was a teenager and at the time working for the Marshalltown School System on their painting crew one summer.

Looking down from the Center Street Viaduct to the Old Timer Tap I could see lots and lots of cars parked around it. I couldn't understand drinking that early in the morning. It was then mentioned to me that  lots of folks who work at night that 7 AM is like 5 PM and is "cock-tail hour" for this early morning bunch! Oh, now I get it!

YOU KNOW YOU'RE A REDNECK/@ BURG GROCERY!

Today at the Burg Grocery a gentleman was checking out and at first I had to take a second look. The man was standing there with a tie and a bright multi- colored checkered shirt. He was also wearing a pair of jeans. I didn't make it down to his shoes. No Matter!

I had helped someone else out and when I returned the "checker" mentioned that the man was or had been a pall bearer at a funeral! I know times have changed, but, I am just not sure I can go that far. Although, a few years ago I was a pall bearer and wore a suit and white shirt without a tie. I was the only one with a suit. All the other men had just "short sleeve shirts" period! Oh well!

A REALLY GREASY ONE AT TAYLOR'S MAID-RITE!!

This past Tuesday I was in Marshalltown and, of course, had lunch at Taylor's with one with everything plus the best chocolate malt with a double shot of malt I have had in a long long time. I was sitting on the north side and was just watching one of the employees load up a bun with an ample amount of the old loose meat.

Then all of a sudden he was scooping up lots and lots of greasy liquid. At least three scoops of the stuff. He quickly wrapped it and took it over to a lady sitting directly across from me on the south side. The story went that she had quit smoking a few years ago, but, it kind of looks like like maybe she has some kind of death wish with this eating "artery blocker!"

MADE ME WANT TO CRY!

The other day I was listening the 70's station on my radio and got in on the beginning of the song "Edmund Fitzgerald." by Gordon Lightfoot. Every time I listen to the lyrics, it makes me sad but at the same time I am fascinated by the lyrics and the haunting story of the ships sinking.

I have always had a luring to the Great Lakes region and every time I hear the words from the cook on the ship before it sank,  who says something like "Boys it's been good to know ya.!" Maybe it's just me!

DO YOU REMEMBER THE WHISKEY A GO-GO!

WATCH THE MAGICIAN'S OTHER HAND!

Someone brought up today something about sleight of hand. When watching a magician doing tricks of various kinds on TV or in person, Several times I was able to stay focused on the "other hand." Try it sometime. It is funny when you stay focused on what they don't want you to watch! That works well on other things too!

YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

As you progress through life and come closer to going out, you ponder occasionally on how you would have done things differently and why things like technology has passed you by. Could it be that you're not as bright as you thought you were?

Sometimes it seems that you are the only person not communicating on the Internet, Texting, You Tube, Facebook, Twitter, or owning a Smart phone. But, throughout life you come to realize that whatever the subject you are not alone. A lady I knew, used to try and convince me that most men she knew enjoyed shopping! Get out of here! I used to think I was the only guy in the world that couldn't work on a car.

Watching sports on TV, you would think that most men play golf. I've had several friends throughout my life that didn't play golf and they succeeded quite well. Also, when you get into antiquing, you realize someone out there is collecting about anything.

Some time ago a friend and classmate stopped by to watch the Iowa-Iowa State football game. He asked where I got my TV and then his wife mentioned then that he didn't really want to buy a new one because his old one` was simple to operate. When he visited his kids and if they left for any reason, he would have them turn the TV on for him because he didn't know how to operate it with all the channels and various remotes.

I've done the same thing at my sister's home. They have satellite coverage with hundreds of channels. Usually there are three or four remotes sitting on the coffee table and I don't have a clue. By the time you read the previews to all the movies being shown, it is time to go to bed.

Hopefully, while I am still around, they'll come up with voice activation on everything. It does make you feel good, once in a while, when you find out that you are not the only "idiot" on the planet. So many people have re-programmed my TV set and system , that I barely know how to run my own anymore!

PITCHING PENNIES/NOT PINCHING PENNIES!

One day at the old Burg Grocery, I teased a couple of young teen-age guys about loafing in the back room and accusing them of "pitching pennies." They looked at me with this blank stare! They didn't have a clue what I was talking about. Yes, I was pulling their chain, but, I was somewhat surprised that they had not heard of this "male" past-time. Maybe I should have mentioned craps.

The concept is quite simple. Two people face a wall a short distance away and one person tosses a penny or quarter at the wall and then the other person tosses his coin at the edge of the wall. The coin must at least touch the wall and then the closest coin to the wall wins and so on until one person takes all the coins from the other guy or the game is called off!

When I was a kid, especially in junior high at dear old Laurel Consolidated School, it was quite popular in the coat-room during recess or lunch time. Maybe some games or past-times don't make it from one generation to the next. Too bad!

FINE DINING IN TINY TOWN!

If you are looking for a fun day trip in and around the state of Iowa, consider FLATHEADS BAR & GRILL in St. Anthony, Iowa. It has been awhile since I have been there but, I know talking to friends in the Marshalltown area it still is worth the trip.

It's only a short 20 minute drive northwest of Marshalltown along E-29 north to Clemons, then west two miles to St. Anthony, population 105 and probably going down. The expression "Location, Location, Location", doesn't really apply here, but, "If they build it they will come" does.

Friends that met me there asked how they would find the bar and grill! I just laughed! One swing around the town and look for all the newer cars sitting outside.! This is not New York City. Once inside you immediately are comfortable. A homey feel!  The two levels are not extremely large, but, roomy. The first thing you observe is how clean it is. The walls are all covered with particle board which gives the place color, warmth, and a certain glow. The many beer signs and neon are placed strategically throughout with a nice complimentary mix of antiques. The twinkly lights around gives the place an added magical feel.

Having never been there, we decided to try the "Special" with beer fries. We also tested the small but tasty salad bar which was included. The battered shrimp was to perfection and the shrimp sauce was on the mark and exceptionally tangy. The beer fries were also crispy and tasty.

We continued to observe , eat and observe some more and noticed the drop ceiling panels were cleverly done in business cards. And, while looking up we noticed how clean the ceiling fans were.

They advertised that the first Saturday of the month was "All you can eat" fish fry. It is definitely worth the drive, especially on a beautiful Iowa autumn day. Oh! By the way did I mention how clean the place was!

MAYBE I SHOULD SWEAR OFF ROLLER COASTER!

At 72 I still want to ride a coaster at least one more time. I love the thrill and always have. This summer they are putting up one at Adventureland in Altoona, Iowa replacing the old Log Ride and it is suppose to be one of the better ones in the entire country. I will be giving it serious thought--however!

A few short years ago, about 5 to be exact, I jumped on the "Tornado," the old fashion wood roller coaster at Adventureland,. I decided to go it alone as no one else would join me at the time!

Up we went on that first long steep trip up before that first long really steep drop down. Oh, how I love that feeling just the second of hesitation before she drops! Of course you must hold your hands up as you drop! Are you kidding, you can't be holding on with your hands.

But, as a precaution, I always keep my toes braced under the seat ahead just in case. I'm not totally stupid! Not sure what I did to my left ankle during that thrilling ride and all that bracing, but, it took at least six weeks for that ankle to return to normal. That still isn't going to stop me again--well, maybe!

SIGNS YOU ARE CLOSER TO GOING OUT THAN COMING IN!

1. When you realize that by jumping off even a 2 foot drop you could break something or seriously injure yourself.

2. You mistake a quarter for a nickel while searching for change.

3. You still want to pick up that nickel or penny, but, bending over isn't worth the risk.

4. You study the price of bananas longer than your stock portfolio.

5. Basketball on TV seems to move faster than it used to.

6. Asking another senior friend, "How are you feeling?" It's mid- morning at the grocery store and when he is done you have missed lunch!

7.Tired of being told by the younger set about technology stuff--"But, you can do it!"

8. Even if the Church Ice-cream Social started at 3 PM and you walked in at 2:30 PM, most everybody you know is already there.

9. Instead of walking with confidence like a Majorette in a marching band, you shuffle more with a slight limp.

10. When going out to lunch, you realize there is nothing on the menu under $5.00!

HEDGE YOUR BET ON RETIREMENT!

Every once in a while you overhear someone mention that they just retired or soon will. I have never cared for that term. It has meant the end of a job or career. This magical number of 65 is antiquated today. Many of my friends are still active in their careers well into their 70's or at least on a part time basis because they enjoy it and not so much out of necessity.

It always has reminded me of a story I read about many years ago. A doctor had retired to the Hilton Head area and played golf every day. Eventually, he became bored and thought there had to be more to life than "just" golf.

At some point, he and a group of his doctor golf playing buddies opened a free clinic for the less fortunate and took turns working it. They all were still able to play golf and do something very worthwhile!

IOWA'S BEST BURGER CAFE!

Yesterday I drove up to Gilman and had lunch with my sister Doris. From there I went over to south of Laurel and had a nice visit with my cousin Alan and shortly after his daughter, Margaret came by.

Heading back to Williamsburg, I couldn't resist stopping in Kellogg for a burger at Iowa's Best Burger Cafe right off I-80. I am not sure about THEY very best in the state, but, if you ever find yourself on I-80 between Newton and Grinnell at meal-time, it is worth a stop. It's clean, cozy, and they also have a great variety of yummy hard ice-cream! If you want a great plain burger without all the "fancy shmancy" toppings, this place is for you!
