One of the last old time neighborhood grocery stores was Mayer's North Street Grocery just west of Center Street and a few blocks north of State Street. Mrs. Mayer was still operating the store till she was 100 years old.
My Aunt Vivian and family lived nearby on North 2nd Street. And, when I was a young boy when staying at their home, I recall going with my cousin, on occasion, to this store to buy groceries. There was one other small neighborhood grocery on North Second in the area called Nutter's. Far cry of the Mega Grocery Stores of today!
