TIDBITS-What's In A Name

There were three names around where I grew up that always seemed kind of funny. Barney Arney. Mertan Gertan and Billy Gilligan. Do you remmber any? No dis-respect intended.

  1. Our mom had a friend/relative named Clarabelle and I was always reminded of the clown of the same name when I heard her talk about her. I'm certain she was a nice woman but her name always made me want to laugh.
I always thought the name DePew, a family who lived in Laurel back in the day, was funny. It always made me want to wrinkle my nose. Again I'm certain they were a fine family and no offence against people with that name.

    1. I thought nothing of my aunts named, Mavis, Glatha, May. Now you don't hear of a young person named Linda!

    2. Some of the really old names are making a return. I have seen May used a lot recently for some new baby girl's middle names. And my Aunt Vivian would be pleased to see her name making a comeback.
My husband's second cousin just named her baby daughter Eleanor, which is also an older name.
Maybe some of the Baby Boomer names like Linda and Deborah will make a comeback in the future. Everything is in cycles.

    3. I don't think names like Mable or Gertrude will make it. When Cora was born I first thought of old ladies with that name. But, then thought about its simplicity and how easy it would be to spell it all her life, hard to shorten it into a nick-name, or for anyone to ask how to pronounce or spell it.
